Fair weather fishermen…
Do you love them or hate them? Or both at different times?
Fishing is a seasonal pass time for many
It is seasonal in different ways…
The fishing season is a term used to describe the time when you are allowed to fish for certain species. Whilst the most obvious examples are salmon and sea-trout, many other fishing venues can get closed during close season.
Some fishery owners like to give the fish a rest, certainly around spawning time where they are more likely to get stressed and die after capture.
Plus, interrupting them when they are having sex is a little rude don’t you think! 🙂
The next type of season is the seasonal variation between summer, autumn, winter and spring. It can be difficult to catch fish during the winter and summer if you are freshwater fishing. In the sea, the seasonal changes are even more important.
There are times of the year where certain parts of the ocean are devoid of fish, except perhaps for very small ones. Many fishing hotspots are terrible if you fish them at the wrong time of year. Try mackerel fishing off a pier in the winter, or cod fishing in the summer and you will know what I am talking about.
The type of seasonal variation that I was thinking about before writing this is the variation in angler numbers. If you are reading this, I guess that you are a “proper” fisherman.
You go fishing for the challenge and adventure, perhaps for the peace and quiet.
Fair weather fishermen…
Which brings me to my point. As soon as the spring is in full progression, and when the summer is upon us, there are hordes of fair weather anglers that suddenly appear in the fishing shop, then on the bank side.
These guys tend to be loud, noisy but somehow have a six sense as to where the best swims are… Well, they certainly seem to know which swim that I was planning to fish in.
I dislike your typical fair weather angler who is noisy and disrespectful, leaving rubbish on the ground and getting drunk…
But the best thing about them?
That they only like good weather.
Imagine if they liked a bright fresh winters day as much as they liked a hazy sunny one? Then we would have to put up with fair weather anglers all years round.
So, overall, lets appreciate the fair weather fishermen for the fact that they are so predictable. If we are not sure whether to fish a busy lake in the summer, and a storm comes in. GREAT we know that there is a good chance that we can pick a swim.
In the winter we can enjoy sometimes having the place to ourselves, for peaceful bliss.
Please do not tell the fair weather anglers that they can buy warm clothes and be quite comfortable even on the bleakest day in the deep of the winter.
Sitting out next to the water, with our trusty stove and kettle, is an amazing thing. You lose track of how old you are, how long you have been on this planet and start to ponder bigger questions. As you daze off due to a sleepy feeling bought on by the cold, you start to wonder how long the universe has existed.
You start to imagine far off planets and wonder if there are any fish to catch there. But most of all? You wonder whether you will ever catch a fish again!
