Many people do not see the attraction in fishing for carp. Even fellow fishermen often struggle with the idea of a carp angler spending serous amounts of time on the bank often with no result.
The paradox of fishing for carp
Usually the more serious and experienced the carp fishermen, the less he carp catches…
That might sound false, or at least very strange at first glance. What tends to happen it that a new carp angler will choose a venue where there is a strong possibility of catching.
Some venues are easier than others based on the level of fish stocks, and the amount of natural food that the carp anglers bait has to compete with. There are other factors such as the amount of fishing pressure, and the number of rules and restrictions levied by the owner or management.
What tends to happen it that a newbie carp fisherman will want to have a good chance to catch at least one carp per day. After all, he will be learning about different rigs, baits, tactics and techniques.
Regular bites will provide feedback as to whether his tactics are working. He will not want to experiment on a carp water that has a very low fish stock or where the carp are hard to catch.
As a carp fisherman grows in knowledge and experience he will want more of a challenge, and more of a reward for his efforts. This isn’t a challenge for the sake of it, he will want to catch bigger carp, more prized captures. This is similar to a big game hunter who does not get much of a buzz by catching rats…
Top carp anglers…
So, at the carp fishing “elite” level, you will find lightly stocked lakes where the weakest carp anglers catch nothing at all, in a whole year. The top guy might catch a handful of fish in a season. If these fish are all huge, then this represents a great year.
Fishing for carp is more difficult than fishing for most other species. They seem to have finely tuned instincts and can sense that they are being fished for. This is especially the case in a fishing venue where stocks are low and natural food is abundant.
Fishing for carp in a crowded, weed free water is much more easy. The fish are hungry and the competition for food is more intense.
So, the bottom line is that when fishing for carp, you are unlikely to get many bites. This is more so for the experienced carp anglers.
So what is the attraction of carp fishing? Surely more fish means more fun?
We know that we can have too much of a good thing, we see this in many areas of life. Would dating be exciting if you knew that every person that you tried to form a relationship with would say yes?
Maybe in the beginning… 🙂
But it is the uncertainty, the challenge, and the disappointments when fishing for carp that provide the sweetness to success.
There are many reasons for people deciding to specialize and fish for carp. One reason is the social aspect amongst the regular carp anglers. Some like the outdoor camping aspect of staying for a few days out in nature.
But it is the challenge that is the main pull of fishing for carp. If you go for a few days or weeks without a single fish, then catch a big one from a venue that is known to be difficult, it is an amazing feeling.
Ask any carp angler, the feeling is up there with most achievements in life such as getting a promotion at work or finding out that your wife is pregnant.
Fishing for carp is one way that we can get back to basics. The lifestyle out there in the fresh air and nature, the thrill of the hunt, the reward of the capture…
Scientists are still trying to unravel the secrets of DNA. There are reports of people receiving transplants experiencing memories from the organ donor. There are reports of identical twins who are separated that can feel things that the other one is feeling.
There are studies that indicate that DNA can contain “memories”. I am getting a bit out of my depth here, but I believe that carp fishing reminds us of the challenges that our ancestors experienced many many years ago. Don’t ask me to try to prove it though!
Fishing for carp provides the relaxation and release that many of us need in everyday life. It provides something to look forward to, it creates happy memories and great friends….
